Nerd Nite Austin #185 – Cues and Queues
Thursday, August 27th, 7:30pm, in person at Barrel O’Fun and live streaming on Twitch The Talks“Perfect Arrangers: The Anatomy of ‘80s Sitcom Theme Songs” by Carolyn Melendez and Corbin Young
Opening theme songs for sitcoms of the 1980s were 60-second vehicles for making strangers feel like family. We’ll dissect what made those intros so memorable and reflect on the one we built for this event.
Carolyn Melendez is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cedar Park. A native New Yorker and child of the 1980s, she has a deep, enduring fascination with pop culture. As singer-songwriter Geesh, Girl!, her soulful, rich and lively sound blends artful lyrics with intuitive melodies that speak directly to the heart.
Corbin Young is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who helps artists turn their ideas into songs via his Cedar Park-based production company, Noiserock Treehouse. He was recently featured on the cover of The Austin Chronicle as the lead vocalist of Mock Lobster, Austin’s tribute to the B-52s.
“A Beginner’s Guide to Queueing” by Zoe Savage
Queuing Theory is the mathematical Study of waiting in lines. However, as lines get longer, they get more complicated, and there’s more than just math involved when designing a queue. I’ll be speaking about the history of queuing theory, a little bit about the math involved, and how we interact with different types of queues in our everyday lives.
Zoe Savage is very interested in queueing theory history, mechanics, and application.
